Lunesta is a trade name for the medication Eszopiclone. This medication is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent. It is prescribed to help those who suffer from insomnia. Lunesta is classified as a cycloprrolone medication and is a short acting sedative hypnotic. It has been shown, through studies, to be safe and effective in the short term treatment of insomnia. Since the medication hit the market, it has become very popular with more than 43 million prescriptions written in 2005 alone. That 43 million prescriptions was in the United States and they generated more than $2.7 billion for the pharmaceutical companies involved in the medications.

As is the case with all medications, Lunesta can cause some unintended side effects. Most patients find that these symptoms will subside on their own within a few days or are not bothersome enough to discontinue the medication as prescribed. Some of the more common side effects include but are not limited to metallic taste in the mouth, bitter taste in the mouth, headaches, chest pain, cold and flu symptoms, fatigue, dry mouth, upset stomach, dizziness, decreased libido, painful menstruation, light headedness, and heartburn. Less common side effects include rashes, itching, lack of coordination, swollen hands, feet, and ankles, as well as painful urination and back pain.

Dosages will vary from patient to patient. The recommended dosage for adults for help with sleep onset or sleep maintenance is two to three mg and 2mg for older adult patients over the age of 65. For those who are struggling with sleep onset a dose of one mg is usually sufficient. Doctors and patients may need to work together closely to find the right dosage for each patient and some are more responsive to low doses than others.
